Celebrating Independence Day: More Than Just Fireworks and BBQ

It’s that time of year again — the 4th of July is just around the corner! The smell of grilled burgers, the sound of laughter echoing across the backyard, and the dazzling fireworks lighting up the night sky — these are the classic images we all associate with America’s birthday.

But beyond the cookouts and celebrations, the 4th of July is a powerful reminder of freedom, resilience, and unity. It’s a day to reflect on the values that built this country and the hard work that keeps those values alive today.

Why the 4th of July Still Matters

As an admin professional, you’re used to juggling deadlines, managing priorities, and keeping things running smoothly, much like the backbone of the workplace. Independence Day is an opportunity to pause and appreciate the freedoms that enable us to pursue our careers, dreams, and goals every day.

It’s also a great reminder of how teamwork and collaboration shape our communities, just like they do in our offices. The spirit of independence isn’t just about standing alone; it’s about coming together to build something stronger.

Simple Ways to Celebrate

Whether you’re hosting a family BBQ, joining a local parade, or just enjoying some time off, here are a few ideas to make your 4th of July meaningful:

  • Connect with Loved Ones: Use this time to unplug from work and spend quality time with those close to you. Share stories, laughs, and create new memories!
  • Support Local Events: Many communities host fireworks shows, festivals, or volunteer opportunities. Get involved and feel the power of community spirit.
  • Reflect on Freedom: Take a moment to consider what freedom means to you personally, and how you can contribute to preserving it for others.
  • Show Gratitude: Thank a veteran or active service member for their sacrifice. A simple “thank you” goes a long way.
  • Give Back: In the spirit of freedom and community, consider donating to your local foodbank or pantry. If you’re looking for a great place to help, I highly recommend the Madison Heights Food Pantry — donations are low, and needs are high.

Safety and Enjoyment Go Hand in Hand

As we celebrate, let’s remember to keep safety front and center — whether it’s handling fireworks responsibly, staying aware of your surroundings, or staying hydrated during those hot summer days. Enjoy the festivities, but be mindful so everyone has a fun, safe holiday.

Final Thoughts

The 4th of July is a beautiful mix of tradition, celebration, and reflection. So, take a deep breath, enjoy the fireworks, and honor the hard-fought freedoms that make these moments possible.

Wishing you a joyful, peaceful, and inspiring Independence Day — however you choose to celebrate it!

Virtual Interviews: Why the Basics Still Matter

Over the last few months, I’ve had several friends and colleagues navigating job searches, and I’ve been paying close attention to what they’re experiencing in virtual interviews.

Even from the sidelines, some clear patterns are starting to emerge.

Virtual interviews have become the new norm. It’s efficient, it’s convenient, and for many roles, it’s here to stay. But just because it’s happening over Zoom doesn’t mean it’s casual. In fact, the basics still carry a lot of weight, and they’re often what separates the standout candidates from the rest.

Here’s what I’m hearing is making a strong impression:

Clear, concise answers
The best candidates are intentional. They answer the question directly, make their point, and then stop talking. No rambling. Just a clear, confident response.

Thoughtful examples
When asked to share a challenge or a win, top candidates pause, pick the right story, and walk through it calmly and clearly. That pause shows thoughtfulness, not hesitation.

Presence
Presence still matters—even through a screen. Showing up on time, looking into the camera, sitting up straight, and carrying yourself like you already belong in the role—it all makes a difference. It sends the message: “I’m ready.”

Do your homework
One of the most overlooked steps is researching the company and the position. Candidates who take time to understand the company’s mission, culture, and recent news—or better yet, reference those things in their answers—immediately stand out. Know the job description, speak to how your experience aligns, and show that you’re genuinely interested in this role at this company, not just any job.

But here’s where some candidates are losing ground—often over things that are 100% fixable:

🚫 Test your system before the meeting
Nothing’s worse than waiting until the last minute only to hit tech issues right at go-time. Test your system early. Check your internet connection, camera, and microphone, and make sure the background behind you is clear of clutter and chaos. Don’t hesitate to use the “blur” feature if needed.

🚫 Too casual
It might feel like just another Zoom, but it’s not. You don’t have to dress like you’re headed to a boardroom, but showing up in a hoodie or workout gear doesn’t help your case. Dress for the role you want—even if your shoes are fuzzy slippers.
Bonus tip: Avoid wild patterns or bright colors. They can be distracting and take the focus off your words.

🚫 Fidgeting and swiveling
Your chair might be cozy, but constant movement can be distracting. Things like swiveling, tapping a pen, or adjusting your screen too much can shift attention away from what you’re saying.

🚫 Rambling
When someone asks, “Tell me about a time when…,” don’t rush to answer. Take a breath. Gather your thoughts. A short pause shows composure and confidence. It’s far better than a long, winding answer that loses momentum.

Most of this isn’t new advice, but in a virtual world, it really stands out. The basics still matter!

If someone you know is preparing for an interview, gently remind them: how you show up speaks just as loudly as what you say.

Be prepared. Be present. Be the person they remember, for all the right reasons.

A New Season, A Fresh Start

There’s something magical about the first real breath of summer. It doesn’t just warm the air—it breathes life into everything. I like to think of each season as a fresh page, and summer? Summer writes in bold, sun-soaked letters!

Whether you’re coming out of a hectic spring, shaking off stress, or just looking to reset your mindset, summer invites us all to slow down, stretch out, and soak in some long-overdue positivity.

A Season of Light

Summer reminds us that joy doesn’t always need planning. It shows up in little things:

  • An early sunrise that greets you with promise
  • A walk without a jacket
  • The sound of kids laughing in the distance
  • A tall glass of iced tea or Coke Zero on the porch
  • Windows down, music up, heart open

This is the time to let the light in: literally and figuratively.

Hit Refresh

The same way we fling open the windows to let the breeze in, summer invites us to open up our hearts and our habits. Is there something you’ve been putting off? A goal you let get dusty? A relationship that needs tending?

Start small.
Start today.
Start with grace.

Summer isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence.

At My Desk This Season…

From my corner of the world, this season means:

  • Encouraging my team to take well-earned PTO and really unplug
  • Keeping meetings a little lighter and more joyful
  • Making space for creativity to bloom, EVEN in the middle of busyness
  • Practicing gratitude for the people, pace, and purpose in my life

And yes, there’s almost always a glass of iced tea or Coke Zero nearby.

A Grateful Heart

More than anything, I’m reminded that this new season is a gift. Each sunrise is a blessing. Each day is another chance to do good, to love well, and to grow.

I thank God for His faithfulness, for fresh starts, and for the beauty that shows up in both the quiet moments and the busy ones.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22–23

So, wherever this summer finds you, whether you’re thriving or just barely surviving, I hope you feel the sunshine not just on your face, but in your soul.

Here’s to barefoot walks, wide-open skies, iced tea, and the beauty of simply beginning again. Let today be your fresh start.

With sunshine and gratitude,
Angie 🌿

Presence Is Power: Why Being in the Room Still Matters

It’s wild to think I’ve been supporting teams and mentoring others for over 25 years. I’ve seen a lot of change in the administrative world.

I still remember being excited when Xerox came out with the Memorywriter, moving from mainframe systems like TSO/ISPF to WordPerfect (with my beloved Reveal Codes—if you know, you know!), and learning how to use a mouse for the first time. Yep… I’ve been around a while. 😄

And wow, have we come a long way. I love seeing the strides we’ve made and the wide variety of roles now available in this field.

Over the last few years, I’ve been helping match administrative professionals with companies and executives. Many are aiming for Executive Assistant roles—or even Chief of Staff positions.

What surprises me, though, is how many are looking for 100% remote roles.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I love the flexibility remote work brings. It’s been a game-changer in so many ways.

But let’s have some real talk: for Executive Assistants who are ready to move from “support staff” to “strategic partner,” working behind a screen can only take you so far.

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years: trust is built in the in-between moments. And most of those don’t happen on Teams, Zoom, or Google Meet.

Think about it—the quick hallway check-in before a meeting. The look your exec gives when something’s off. The impromptu coffee chat that turns into a brainstorm, a solution, or a brilliant idea.

Those little moments? They stack up. They build connection. They build confidence. They build trust.

And that’s the foundation of a true partnership.

Now, I’m not saying ditch remote work altogether. There are definitely times it makes sense—when your exec’s traveling, when it’s a quiet week, when you need a little breathing room. But if your goal is to become that go-to person—trusted not just for scheduling, but for insight and leadership—you need to be in the room.

Physically present. Tuned in. Anticipating needs before they’re even spoken.

I had a wonderful boss who jokingly called me Radar (yep, a MAS*H reference) and said I fix things before they’re even broken. That only happens because I was there. I could read the room, spot gaps in a process, and sense when something needed a tweak—often before anyone else noticed.

That’s when the shift happens. That’s when you go from being “the assistant” to someone your exec doesn’t want to make a move without.

This isn’t about going back to the old way—it’s about moving forward with intention.

Presence isn’t just about showing up. It’s about showing you care. It’s about showing you’re all in.

And it might just be your most powerful tool.

One Word Does Makes a Difference

A few years ago I decided to purposefully seek God for one word to be my focus and direction for the upcoming new year. These are always meaningful words that end up being part of my story as I walk through the year. These words weave into the fabric of my story, offering guidance and reflection.

In a world filled with constant noise and complexity, the idea of simplifying seems to be a beacon of tranquility and focus. As we step into the promising realms of 2024, my one word that will guide my journey throughout the year: “Simplify.”

Hmmmm… amidst the challenges of deadlines, obligations, and the constant clamor of life, “Simplify” emerges. Hopefully to help me learn to be more calm and focused. Transcending the mere act of decluttering physical spaces; it’s a holistic embrace of a minimalist lifestyle, valuing quality over quantity and intentional living over mindless consumption.

In the face of my daily relentless to-do lists and the urgency of tasks, “Simplify” prompts me to discern between the urgent and the necessary. Encouraging me to streamline my priorities, letting go of the unnecessary to create a life centered around what truly matters: God, family and friends.

The dictionary defines “Simplify” as making things easier, uncomplicating, streamlining, and reducing to essentials. Today, it means pausing my to-do list to savor the joy of watching my grandbabies play, reevaluating self-expectations, and taking a deep breath to distinguish between the urgent and the necessary.

From material possessions to the information I consume, “Simplify” will remind and lead me toward mindful choices aligned with my values. It’s a deliberate step away from excesses that clutter my mind and life, helping to better foster clarity and purpose.

For me, as a Christian, simplifying is not just about responding to the chaotic world; it’s about the central issue of obedience to God. It’s a call to live a life centered on loving God and people, navigating complexity with a singular focus on following Christ.

“Simplify” extends its invitation to find balance—a delicate balance between work and leisure, productivity and rest. It empowers me to say ‘no’ to the unnecessary, creating space for a more fulfilling ‘yes’ to things that truly matter.

As I embark on the journey of simplification in 2024, I anticipate not just a decluttered physical space but a profound sense of peace, purpose, and fulfillment. Through intentional choices and a commitment to simplicity, I hope to craft a life that is both meaningful and authentic.

With anticipation of the Lord’s leading, I look forward to seeking His guidance for a year where less becomes more, and the essence of life shines through beautifully uncomplicated moments. May “Simplify” grant me more space to love God and love people wholeheartedly.

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances… I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:11-13).

Embracing the Joy of Family: A Holiday Reflection

As the holiday season wraps us in its warm embrace, I find myself reflecting on the immense importance of family. Our home, adorned with the laughter of our granddaughter Charlie Joy, the sweet squeaks and coos of our newest granddaughter baby Wren, and the comforting presence of loved ones, becomes a sanctuary of love during this magical time. The presence of our granddaughters serve as reminders of the innocence and purity that the Christmas story embodies. It is a story that began with a humble birth in Bethlehem—a divine gift to humanity, a manifestation of God’s unconditional love for us all.

My heart swells with gratitude for the incredible blessing of having daughters who’ve blossomed into remarkable women, and sons-in-law who add their unique colors to the canvas of our family. The joy and energy that their families bring into our lives make our home a bustling haven of warmth.

Baby Wren made her appearance a few weeks early.

At the center of it all stands my amazing husband, a pillar of strength and love. His unwavering support and companionship make every moment special. Together, we navigate the twists and turns of life, creating a tapestry woven with threads of shared memories and enduring love.

Sweet Charlie Joy with Papa (Mark, my husband)

Our journey is not without its challenges; we face ups and downs like any other family. Yet, in the midst of it all, we find solace in keeping God-centered joy as our compass. It’s this foundation that allows us to weather storms and celebrate victories, always united by the bond of unconditional love.

Our house may not be a picture of perfection, but it is a reflection of the imperfect beauty that comes with a family knit together by love. The echo of laughter and the hum of conversation fill the air, creating a symphony that resonates with the heartbeat of our shared experiences.

As grandparents, we revel in the delightful chaos brought by our grandbabies. Their innocent laughter and boundless energy infuse our home with a renewed sense of wonder. Each hug and giggle is a reminder of the precious gift of family, a treasure that transcends time and brings everlasting joy.

In the tapestry of our lives, our parents stand as wise weavers who have imparted invaluable lessons and shaped the fabric of our family story. Their presence adds a layer of wisdom and tradition (and belly laughs), connecting generations in a seamless dance of past, present, and future.

My dad and mom

So, as we gather around the table, adorned with the bounty of the season, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude. Grateful for the love that surrounds us, the laughter that echoes through our home, and the shared moments that make our family uniquely ours. In this tapestry of togetherness, we find the true magic of the holidays—wrapped in the warmth of family, anchored in the embrace of love. The tapestry of our family story is intricately woven with threads of faith, connecting each generation to the timeless narrative of God’s love.

I’d like to send a reminder to cherish not only the bonds of family but also the true reason for the season. As we revel in the love and laughter that fill our home, it’s essential to pause and reflect on the profound significance of the holiday.

In the midst of the festive chaos, let us not forget that the heart of Christmas beats with the joyous celebration of the birth of Jesus. His teachings of love, compassion, and forgiveness provide the guiding light for our family journey. Through the challenges and triumphs, we find strength in the enduring message of hope and salvation that the season represents.

So, on this December 26, 2023, amidst the crumpled wrapping paper and festive decorations, let us hold dear to the true meaning of Christmas, not just this week, but all year. In the warmth of family, anchored in the embrace of love, we find a reflection of the divine love that continues to bless us.

Celebrating Three Years of Charlie Joy: A Bundle of Love and Laughter

As I sit down to reflect on the past three years, my heart swells with gratitude and happiness at the thought of our sweet granddaughter Charlie Joy turning three. From the moment she entered our lives, she has been a constant source of laughter, love, and boundless energy.

Charlie Joy, aptly named for the joy she radiates, is a whirlwind of activity. It’s as if she’s discovered the secret to perpetual happiness, and she generously shares it with everyone around her (most of the time, remember she is three… LOL!). Whether she’s talking a mile a minute, singing her heart out, or twirling in spontaneous dances, Charlie is usually a bundle of pure, unbridled joy.

Despite her vivacious personality, we’ve come to learn that our little Charlie also treasures her moments of introversion. There’s a certain sweetness in watching her retreat into her own world, finding solace in quiet moments and recharging her feisty spirit.

Books hold a special place in Charlie’s heart. It’s heartwarming to see her tiny fingers eagerly flipping through pages, her eyes alight with curiosity. She’s embarked on countless adventures through the colorful pages of her favorite stories, and it’s clear that her love for books is setting the stage for a lifelong journey of imagination.

Charlie’s fascination with TV shows and movies is equally endearing. The way her eyes light up when her favorite characters grace the screen is a testament to the joy she finds in these moments of entertainment. It’s as if she’s absorbing the magic of storytelling, adding layers to her ever-growing understanding of the world.

She has a love for animals (especially dogs), dinosaurs, Magna-Tiles, babies, nature / playing outside, and anything she can do to get dirty. She is so busy and completely content to play alone, but also loves to have us play with her.

One can’t help but marvel at Charlie’s intelligence. Watching her tackle problems and figure out how things work is a daily reminder of the incredible capacity for learning that resides in such a tiny package.

And then there’s the sass—the delightful, unexpected sass that has become a trademark of our beloved three-year-old. It adds a playful spark to our days, a reminder that even in the midst of challenges, laughter is the best medicine.

Thank you God for the blessing of Charlie Joy, our little Covid surprise, who has been a beacon of light in challenging times. She’s a reminder that amidst uncertainty, love and joy have a remarkable way of shining through.

As we celebrate Charlie’s third birthday, we can’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of love and adoration for this feisty, intelligent, and utterly lovable little soul. Oh how she has changed us, for the better. Happy birthday, sweet Charlie Joy. Praying your days continue to be filled with laughter, love, and the boundless joy you bring to us all. Grammy loves you!

A Grateful Heart: Thanksgiving Reflections

As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, my heart is brimming with gratitude for the treasured moments and cherished connections that enrich my life. This past weekend, our family came together in a celebration of love, laughter, and togetherness that left a lasting mark on my heart.

The festivities kicked off early as we welcomed my sister Kimmie and her husband Conrad into town. The reunion brought a wave of warmth and joy, turning our time together into a precious haven of well needed family time. There’s something magical about having loved ones close, especially during a season dedicated to gratitude.

Our gathering took on an extra layer of joy, especially because we were also marking the third birthday of our adorable granddaughter, Charlie Joy. The sparkle in her eyes and the contagious excitement she radiated reminded us of the joy that family brings. Plus, this little munchkin is crazy about anything ‘dinosaur’—she had a roaring good time.

Amidst the laughter and delicious aromas wafting from our Thanksgiving feast, I found myself reflecting on the multitude of blessings that grace my life. Family, good food, and the innocent delight of a child – these are the treasures that make life truly rich.

In the midst of our busy lives, it’s easy to overlook the significance of these moments. Yet, as we gathered around tables, I was reminded to keep an attitude of gratitude. Each smile, each shared story, and each loving embrace spoke volumes about the importance of appreciating the simple joys that surround us.

As we express our gratitude to a loving God for these precious moments, I am filled with a deep sense of contentment. Thanksgiving is not just a day; it’s a reminder to carry the spirit of thankfulness with us throughout the year.

So, as we approach this Thanksgiving Day, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the blessings in your life, whether big or small. May your hearts be as full as your plates, and may the warmth of gratitude linger long after the last slice of pie is enjoyed.

Wishing you all a Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter, and an abundance of gratitude.

Happy Thanksgiving!

12 Random Facts: Unmasking My Story?

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, there’s a trend making the rounds – the “get to know you” lists. It has me reflecting on the need for connection in a world that’s experienced a significant decline in social interactions since the Covid shutdown.

As we navigate these changed social dynamics, it’s surprising to realize the extent to which this shift has impacted my own life. Let’s take a light hearted journey as I peel back some layers and share, maybe unexpected, random facts about myself. I’d love for you to take a minute and comment a random fact about yourself.

  1. I missed writing, and have rekindled the passion for blogging (thus this blog). I am still trying to prioritize my time, finding that work/life balance is a dance I’m still figuring out.
  2. When I am passionate about something, I get pretty intense. I am willing to fight for what I believe is right.
  3. When I was young I used to write everyone poems or songs. I wanted to change my name to Cindy and sing the songs I wrote. (Yes, I got the name from the Brady Bunch!)
  4. I have a scar on my eye and eyelid from a rock fight in the alley behind my house in Detroit when I was young. My Grandma was watching us and as I was crying pink bloody tears, she made it all better by bringing me to the Dairy Queen. Just proves the answer is always ice cream.
  5. One of my favorite toys growing up was Daring Debbie. The female version of Evel Knievel. Oh the adventures I’d have! Making her motorcycle do stunts all over the house – tables, couches, you name it.
  6. I love laughter! Life’s not always sunshine, but I’m on a quest to find joy in the rain. I think we should live joyfully. I may not always be happy about my life situations, but I try to walk with joy through all circumstances. I try to speak positively and look for the good in situations. I’m not perfect and sometimes I do have self imposed pity parties, but very few people know about them (shhh!).
  7. I love to show God’s love in tangible ways. Giving without expecting anything in return. Our home is ALWAYS open to those who need help: a haven for anyone seeking a hand up, a hug, or a safe space. We have walked through some deep valleys and God always provided those special people to walk beside us. We are trying to do the same.
  8. My favorite beverage is… caffeine. Warm or cold, it is the wonderful nectar of the gods. I am thankful for the sweet, goodness of coffee, ice tea and Pepsi Max. I big fat squishy heart them! I indulge my love of the magical life of caffeine daily. It is one of those simple treasures in my life. Ok, for those who really know me, this could be the actual glue that holds me together.
  9. During my married years we have owned a blood hound, pug, French bulldog, American bulldog, french Bordeaux mastiff, guinea pig, many fish and 5 birds. Each pet holds a special chapter in our family’s story.
  10. People think I am an extrovert. I love people…the ones I know. With strangers and new situations I am quiet and withdrawn. I would never be able to eat in a restaurant or go to the movies alone. Networking events are torture for me! I am a crazy mix of introvert and extrovert. Yup, the Introvert-Extrovert Tango, the struggle is real. I am an ambivert.
  11. I am ambidextrous. I mostly use my right hand since that’s how I learned to do things as a child. I have an issue with remembering left from right. (As well as being totally directionally challenged.) Right-handed by habit, left and right confusion on the daily – a quirky side effect of being ambidextrous.
  12. I love kids (especially my granddaughters). I think our youth deserve our time and energy. I believe it is our responsibility to reach out and help those who need some guidance. To see them step out, up and succeed in life! One of the best investments of time and energy, offering hope, and cheering them on as they navigate this wild journey.

Life here on earth can be hard and way too short, let’s not forget to laugh, love, and share some joy along the way. Let’s all find ways to bridge the gap and rediscover the power of genuine connections in a world that’s longing for them.

Honoring Our Heroes: Veterans Day 2023

Living in an imperfect world means we rely on soldiers to safeguard us from harm. Our armed services consist of incredible individuals who willingly sacrifice to protect our country and freedoms. Tributes to the military hold a special place in my heart, especially since many of my loved ones are veterans.

On Veterans Day, we pause to reflect and express gratitude to these remarkable people. They’ve dedicated years of their lives to a perilous job that few are willing to take on. Many have faced trauma, injury, and the loss of fellow veterans. Survivors carry vivid memories of the past, like my Pops who would share stories of horrible battles, yet exuded a deep love for his country. Perhaps, only rivaled by my husband’s Semper Fi spirit.

So, how can we adequately thank these brave souls for their time and sacrifices? Regardless of political beliefs, it’s crucial to appreciate these men and women. They deserve every parade, accolade, and “veteran’s discount” we can offer. Let’s make it a habit to thank veterans not just today, but whenever the opportunity arises. May God bless, protect, and shower our veterans with mercy and favor.

I feel incredibly blessed to live in a country where I can openly express my gratitude!
